SINGLE INCISION LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR GALL BALDDER STONES
Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) is a new and novel way of performing laparoscopic surgery, explained Dr. Dilip Rajpal
Usually Laparoscopic Surgery involves making 4 cuts (two 10 mm and 2 five mm) on the abdomen to dissect and remove the gall bladder (multiport laparoscopy).
In SILS technique only a single 20 mm cut is made deep within the belly button through which specialised instruments are placed and all the surgery and removal of the gall bladder are performed through this single 20 mm cut.
At the conclusion, the cut is closed using absorbable stitches. waterproof dressing is given
One can shower very next day and will be back to work in 4 to 5 days.
Besides very pleasing cosmetic results, the pain is less as only one cut is made instead of four as each cut hurts separately.
The technique is very special, requiring different skills than multiport surgery and advanced training and experience to complete the surgery safely through a single cut instead of four cuts.
SILS in simple words is increasing the difficulties for the surgeon to give extra advantage to the patients in terms of improved cosmesis, decreased pain and faster recovery.
SILS Surgery is fast becoming more popular.
